Skatteverket is the Swedish Tax Agency where internationals should register upon arriving in Sweden.
You will most likely have to file a tax return if you fulfil any of the following criteria:
- You are living in Sweden permanently.
- You have recently moved to Sweden and plan to live here for more than one year.
- You have lived in Sweden previously.
- You have been employed by a company based in Sweden.
- You have been employed to carry out work in Sweden for a foreign company with a permanent establishment in Sweden.
- You have been employed to carry out work in Sweden for more than six months on behalf of a foreign company with no fixed establishment in Sweden.
Tax Rates and Brackets:
- In Sweden, most people pay only local tax on their annual income and the tax varies depending on the municipality where you are registered. To find the rate for your municipality, head on to this link, enter the income year you are looking to calculate for (inkomstår), choose your municipality (kommun) and get information on the table that applies to you and the tax breakdown.
- Annual income over 598 500 SEK in 2023 is subject to state income tax rate of additional 20%. The limit is subject to change every year. For more information, head on here.

Tax Return Process:
- The Swedish tax calendar is 1st January to 31st December.
- Pre-filled return forms are sent during early spring (March-April) of the following year. The returns are due to be submitted to the Tax Agency in May and final decisions by the Tax Agency are shared in June. Once the decision is in, either the Swedish Tax Agency pays out any tax refund you are due or you have to make a final payment of the residual tax to pay in autumn. - The Swedish Tax return can be done online on Skatteverket.se using digital ID or submitting the declaration documents by post to Skatteverket.
- The tax return form is pre-filled with information from your employer as well as your bank. To understand what the different parts of the form entail, head on to this link.
- You can either approve the pre-filled tax return form as is or if you have other incomes (including from your home country) or deductions to add to your return, you can proceed to add the information in the designated section before approving the return.
